New York Micro-Dramas Project Description
It was International Compost Awareness Week, May 2017. Where else was an emerging photographer with a fascination for compost going to go, but to the streets of New York City to visit compost collection sites? The diversity of shapes and colors that appeared in the large black or green bins mirrored the diversity of people sharing their food scraps.

“Good morning, good people,” one man said as he pulled his bag of frozen fruits and veggies from the back of his son's stroller. This community spirit inspired me to return to the city again in July and September of that year to continue documenting what New Yorker’s composted.

The images in this collection are different from the compost photographs I created at home. Much of the compost arrives frozen, creating different textures in the bins and because the compost is contained in black or green plastic, the lighting is different as well. And then there is the scale of it all. It took me four years to collect one ton of my family’s compost; It took just a few hours on street corners in New York to gather the same amount.

What remains is the kaleidoscope of colors and shapes that celebrate the positive energy that emerges when people know they are contributing to something greater than themselves.

Limited editions of my work are available upon request. New York Micro-Dramas come in two sizes (18" x 18" and 12" x 12"). Please contact me about availability and pricing.
