When I look at my feet, I wonder who has walked this path, street or beach before me. Is my presence helping or hurting? I notice my shoes. Who made them and were they paid a living wage? And how much water was consumed to manufacture the nylon or leather? I then notice the texture of the land on which I walk and remember that while I may have small feet, my footprint on earth is enormous.
I walk more slowly in a spirit of reverence. This act will not halt climate change or make our society more just, but every time I look down, I remember that this land is not mine. In fact, this land belongs to herself and will outlive us all. She may, unless we reframe our relationship to her, be glad when we are gone.
